A Fresh Look at Hand Built Tableware

Saturday & Sunday, 1-4pm

June 7 & 8. 2 sessions, 6 hrs

Tuition: $130 ($120*)

Materials fee: $15 for 12lbs of clay

Create hand built tableware from the quiet to the eccentric, from clunkware to the ephemeral. In this 6-hour workshop, you will explore how to pinch up layers of rolled coils to build form, and learn a variety of slip decorating techniques that synchronize surface to form. Some clay experience recommended.

In this beginner’s class you will learn the basics of using the potter’s wheel. Glazing and slip decoration methods will also be discussed as you create finished pieces to bring home. We suggested that you take this class two or three times before proceeding to the intermediate classes. Tuition inlcudes a basic tool kit. Wear old clothes and bring a towel and notebook to class.

If you feel stuck in a rut or are just generally uninspired by traditional round forms, this class promises to look at the way things go together in new ways. You will have the opportunity to delve into the endless possibilities offered by composite vessels. As we look at historical forms, we will put pieces together in unique ways to create work unlike any seen before. Be prepared to shake-up your style, whether on the wheel or hand-built. Bring a journal.

As a beginner clay student you will learn introductory hand building and pottery wheel techniques by creating finished glazed pieces from raw clay. As an intermediate student you will fine-tune your pottery skills on the wheel and in hand building. Tim will cover basic techniques and finishing rims, feet, handles, and lids as well as helping you with individual projects. Wear old clothes; bring an old towel and notebook to class. First time students receive a basic tool kit.

As a ceramics student with some experience working on the potter’s wheel, you will concentrate on forming, turning, pulling handles, and assembling unusual pieces. You will also explore decorating techniques inspired by the rich history of English slipware, African sgraffito and Japanese-style brushwork.

Summer's here and flowers abound. You will spend the class making all sorts of pots for plants—from the bouquet to the single blossom. The class is suitable for beginners as well as experienced ceramicists.
