Create a beautiful 24” x 36” canvas area rug that is sturdy and durable. Step-by-step instructions for designing, painting, hemming, painting, and sealing your canvas will be covered. This workshop is ideal for all levels, from beginner to pro. Classes will meet at the instructor’s studio in Lebanon, NH. Materials fee covers pre-primed canvas, paints, finishing varnish and wax, and non-skid rug underlay. Limited to five students.

The following series of classes can be taken singly or as a whole. They are designed to introduce the crafts artist—professional or novice—to all aspects of working with digital images from taking the picture to creating the perfect image of your craft work. The classes are not designed to make you a digital artist, rather to help you understand the technology so that you can produce quality digital images of your work.

Bring your digital camera, or just your questions about them, to class to learn about many aspects of digital cameras including: a brief, simple explanation of how the camera works; image quality and formats; lenses, exposures, shutters; power, batteries, memory; menus, settings, buttons, metering; composing, proper lighting, choosing the best image, observing details, storing and transferring images; camera outputs. We will also discuss a few comparisons to film. A list of helpful resources will be provided.

Photographing Your Craftwork

Using simple lighting equipment, techniques and the settings on your digital camera , Jon will show you how to take quality photographs of your work. Topics will include: backgrounds; studio lighting for the maximum effect; pre-composing (multiple images to capture the qualities of the object); 2-D and 3-D capturing surfaces and volume; destination and output files.

Introduction to Using Photoshop

Bring your laptop/computer to class with Photoshop (not Elements) installed and learn to work with this extraordinary program. The first class will introduce you to the Photoshop's windows, tools palette options and menus. You will learn to import images from your digital camera, fix mistakes, retouch, composite images, file formats, and more. In the second class you will learn to make your work look as good or better than when you made it by sharpening and softening images, cropping, correcting for camera distortion using Photoshop filters and so on. You will gain an understanding of the different size and resolutions for web, press release prints, portfolio prints, and posters.

This 4-week class can accommodate either the beginning student who wants to learn the basics of glass bead making and those who have taken one or more classes and would like to practice their newly acquired skills. Join Grant Taylor for a two-part class on carving inset letters using traditional wood carving chisels and mallets. You will carve a simple plaque that can be used for a house sign, mailbox or E-911 numbers. The class is suitable for people without any wood carving experience, as it is an introduction to woodcarving.

Rustic furniture is timeless and fits both outdoor and indoor spaces. In this one-day workshop you will learn the basics of furniture design and an assortment of joinery techniques to create your own one-of-a-kind chair, bench or table from saplings. Seat finishing will be discussed. No woodworking experience is necessary. This is an outdoor workshop and will take place at Justin Morrill Vermont State Historic Site, Strafford, VT.
