John Quimby
Media: Clay

Formerly a chef and restauranteur, in 2003 on a whim, I enrolled in a beginners clay class at the League of NH Craftsmen. Something sparked deep inside, and I began a jouney of exploration in the world of clay that continues to this day.

I am particularly drawn to a hand building technique called Neriage or Nerikomi by the Japanese. I layer and manipulate various colored clay bodies to create patterns and designs in a loaf of clay, from which slices are cut and then formed into ceramic pieces. The finished piece is colored throughout, appearing as surface decoration on all sides.

I strive to find a pleasing balance of pattern and form.
